Pueblo South senior Kimberly Sample is Pueblo Chieftain's new Student of the Week

Kimberly Sample, a senior at Pueblo South High School, has been voted the Pueblo Chieftain's Student of the Week.

More than 24,000 votes were cast in this week's contest, with Sample receiving more than 46.5% of the vote. In a close second was Sample's fellow South High School Colt Andres Cura, who received just under 40% of the vote.

Sample has painted two murals at her high school, earned seven academic letters, and has logged over 400 community service hours. She has volunteered with Junior Achievement, K-Kids, Lynn Gardens Baptist Church food banks, PAWS and the Steelworks Center of the West. She also ranks second in her class, is a successful concurrent enrollment student and a three-year Key Club secretary.

Five students, including Sample, were featured in a Student of the Week poll on the Chieftain website from March 4 to March 7. The five students were nominated for their achievements inside and outside of the classroom.

Patton Coughlin, Pueblo County High School

Patton Coughlin is a Hornet junior who was a top-three finalist in this year's Denver Center for Performing Arts playwriting competition. Their play, titled "Bridge," was selected from a pool of 107 entries across the state and performed by professional actors at the Colorado New Play Summit on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25. "Bridge" also was performed for Pueblo County High School students on Feb. 26.

Andres Cura, Pueblo South High School

Andres Cura is a four-sport athlete who has kept a 4.0 GPA through four years at Pueblo South High School. He has competed in basketball, cross country, soccer and track for the Colts. Cura will continue to be an exemplary student-athlete at Fort Lewis College after graduation. The future Fort Lewis Skyhawk will study engineering while competing in cross country and track.

Phil Rasmussen, Pueblo West High School

Phillip Rasmussen is a 4.24 GPA student, student council president, speech and debate captain, Knowledge Bowl captain, Model UN president and junior varsity tennis captain. The Cyclone senior displays a strong work ethic, keeps a sense of humor and is inclusive of students throughout Pueblo West High School, according to speech and debate coach Shiela Sloan.

Reese Romero, Dutch Clark Digital Online

Reese Romero is speaking from experience when he advises fellow students to maintain a positive attitude and take responsibility for themselves. That's how he has experienced academic success and become a shining example for others to follow at Dutch Clark Digital Online. The soon-to-be graduate cites his father as his biggest influence, aspires to attend college and work as a mechanic.
