Pueblo middle schooler arrested after police say he brought a handgun to school

Police arrested a Roncalli STEM Academy student Monday after a school resource officer allegedly found a stolen handgun in the student's possession on school grounds.

The unidentified student was booked into the Pueblo Youth Services Center for possession of a handgun by a minor, according to Sgt. Franklyn Ortega, public information officer for the Pueblo Police Department.

The incident was the second this year in which police say a student at the middle school on the south side of Pueblo was found with a handgun.

In January, a Roncalli student was arrested for allegedly bringing a loaded 9mm pistol to school.

The two incidents are not believed to be connected, Pueblo School District 60 spokesman Dalton Sprouse said.

"We train our staff and students to be vigilant and report," he said. "We are again thankful that the issue was able to be resolved so quickly."

Pueblo's only STEM magnet middle school, Roncalli offers a curriculum weighted toward science, technology, engineering and math to students in grades six to eight, it says on its website
