Pueblo man arrested in connection to early Saturday shooting

Pueblo police have arrested an 18-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder following a shooting on Northern Avenue early Saturday morning.

The Pueblo Police Department announced Monday in a news release officers had arrested Juaquin Avila on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, a class 1 felony. Avila is being held at the Pueblo County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond.

Emergency dispatch received a call at approximately 12:41 a.m. Saturday from a business in the 900 block of West Northern Avenue reporting that multiple shots were fired in the parking lot and the involved parties had left.

Preliminary information gathered by police revealed that two males had approached a vehicle parked in front of the business and allegedly "opened fire," injuring those inside the vehicle, according to the release.

At 12:43 a.m., dispatch received another call from a woman who said she'd been shot and was driving herself to a local hospital for treatment. Six minutes later, an officer on a separate call for service at a local hospital said a man with a gunshot wound had walked into the hospital for treatment.

Detectives from Pueblo PD's Special Investigation Division were called to assist with the investigation. During their review of surveillance video, police say the detectives identified the suspects and suspect vehicle, which is what led to Avila's arrest, according to the release.

Avila was taken to the Pueblo County jail and booked on two charges of attempted first-degree murder.

Additional arrests related to the shooting are expected, Pueblo PD said in its release.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in court. Arrests and charges are merely accusations by law enforcement until, and unless, a suspect is convicted of a crime.
