Pueblo making road one-way to reduce crashes

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The City of Pueblo said the Public Works/ Transportation Department will convert one block of Acero Avenue near the Mountain View Cemetery into a one-way road, with the goal to increase safety and reduce crashes.

According to the City, the change is a response to an “extremely” high number of broadside crashes, saying there have been 22 broadside crashes in the past five years and those represent half of the crashes in the area.

The change will impact one block of Acero Avenue between West Northern Avenue and Anasazi Street. The City said the conversion will change the block of Acero Avenue to allow for southbound traffic only.

“Safety is one of the highest priorities of traffic management for our citizens in Pueblo,” said Traffic Engineer for the City of Pueblo, Melanie Turner. “Converting this one-block segment from Northern Avenue to Anasazi Street will make Acero Avenue much safer for drivers, pedestrians, and all community members.”

The City said northbound drivers were at fault in 95% of the broadside crashes due to the poor lines of sight caused by the stone wall entrances of the Mountain View Cemetery. Since the walls are historically significant, they will remain in place and the one-way conversion will eliminate any unnecessary design changes to structures or landmarks in the area.
