Publix has always been closed on Easter Sunday. In fact, for the first 53 years of its existence, the supermarket’s founder, George Jenkins, resisted opening on any given Sunday until 1983.
But Easter Sunday is a sacred holiday for millions who observe the Christian holiday. So many South Florida malls and some supermarkets and big box stores close for the day.
Because Easter is always on a Sunday, expect fewer schedule changes than a major holiday that falls on a weekday. Services and businesses already closed on Sundays will remain closed. Most city and government services are closed as usual, too.
Here is a rundown on services:
Public services
▪ Court: Closed on Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
▪ Post office: No mail delivery on Sunday, Easter or otherwise. Post offices are open on Good Friday.
▪ Schools: Public schools in Miami-Dade and Broward are closed on Good Friday for spring break, and closed Sunday.
▪ Banks: Typically closed on Sunday and open on Good Friday.
▪ Mass transit: Miami-Dade and Broward public transit systems and Tri-Rail operate as usual Friday and on weekend schedule on Sunday.
▪ Restaurants: Chick-fil-A is closed on all Sundays. Most chain restaurants are open on Easter, but call to check before heading out.
