Publix announces plans for a second Lexington grocery store: Here’s what we know.

Publix, the Florida supermarket chain that is moving into Kentucky, announced a second Lexington location will be coming, this time on the northwest side of town.

The new grocery store will be at Citation Point, in the southeast corner of Georgetown Road and Citation Boulevard. No opening time frame was announced for the 46,000-square-foot store.

“We are excited to soon be adding another new store in Lexington, and we’re looking forward to serving our new customers!” the company said through a spokesperson.

Publix previously announced plans to build its first Lexington grocery store at the Fountains at Palomar shopping center on Harrodsburg Road. Construction on that store has begun and it is expected to open in late 2024.

The shopping center at the corner of Harrodsburg Road and Man O’ War Boulevard will have a 55,701-square-foot store with a drive-thru pharmacy and an adjacent 3,200-square-foot liquor store.

Lexington will now have two Publix locations. The first is under construction at Harrodsburg and Man o’ War. The second spot is at the southeast corner of Georgetown Road and Citation Boulevard.

In December, the city planning commission approved a development plan for the property at Citation and Georgetown with a then-unspecified 47,000-square-foot store.

In addition to the new store, the plans show an additional 22,750 square feet of attached retail and office space.

The primary entrance will be on Citation through a yet-to-be-installed traffic signal. There will be left turn only and right turn only entrances from Georgetown Street onto Remington Way.

Publix announced a second Lexington store will be coming to the northwest side of town but it will be smaller than the first location currently under construction.

Fuqua Development of Atlanta, the developer, has agreed to do all the of those traffic upgrades, including installing turn lanes on Citation and Georgetown and new traffic medians.

In addition, the property has 12 other smaller lots along the perimeter.

Fuqua said in December that construction likely will begin in the spring of 2023. The building should hopefully be completed in spring or summer of 2024.

Kentucky Publix grocery store locations

In addition to the two Lexington locations, Publix is scheduled to open its first Kentucky store by the end of 2023 in Louisville. The company broke ground in June 2022 at Old Henry Road near the Gene Snyder Freeway.

Two more Louisville locations also have been announced: One near Ballardsville Road and Brownsboro Road in eastern Jefferson County and one at the northwest corner of Flat Rock and Shelbyville Roads in east Louisville. Both are scheduled to open in 2024.
