Public Service Commission of West Virginia investigates process behind outage notification

CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — Multiple utility companies are involved in an investigation regarding how they notify customers affected by service outages.

An investigation was launched by state regulators into service outage notifications from cable and utility providers. 14 regulated utilities were notified by the Public Service Commission of West Virginia that they need to explain how they inform individual customers who are affected by outage incidents, and they will have 20 days to respond to the given order.

Beckley Water Company, West Virginia-American Water Company, Monongahela Power, The Potomac Edison Power Company, Appalachian Power Company, Wheeling Power Company, Consumers Gas Utility Company, Cardinal Natural Gas Company, Hope Gas Inc., Mountaineer Gas Company, Union Oil & Gas, Inc., Optimum, Morgantown Utility Board, and Frontier West Virginia Inc. are the 14 companies that were named in the investigation.

The utility companies will need to explain their process of notifying each customer that is affected by service outages; as well as any plans to improve, add to, modify, or expand notification systems; explain if there are physical or technical barriers to sending out electronic notifications through text messages or email; and to describe what plans are in place to inform mass communication media of outages.
