PSC asks state Supreme Court to return Florida Power & Light Co. rate case for reconsideration

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- The Public Service Commission wants the state Supreme Court to return a Florida Power & Light Co. rate settlement for reconsideration.

The state's consumer advocate, Public Counsel J.R. Kelly, appealed the settlement, which increased FPL's base rates, to the high court on Feb. 7. FPL is a unit of NextEra Energy Inc.

Prior to that filing, though, an individual consumer, Thomas Saporito, had asked the commission to reconsider its approval of the settlement between FPL and groups representing commercial and governmental customers.

The commission on Thursday asked the justices to send the case back so it can act on Saporito's request.

Kelly was not a party to the settlement and opposed it. He says it's a bad deal for most of FPL's 4.6 million customers in South Florida and on the state's east coast.
