PS5 price and release date: What we still don't know about Sony's new PlayStation console
Sony has finally unveiled the PS5 – but plenty remains unknown about the new console.
The company gave a full look at its design, as well as the many games that are planned to be launched for it, during a major event.
But it is still yet to announce the price or release date of the new console, as well as which of those games are due to come out alongside its release.
The only information Sony has given about release date is that it will arrive in "Holiday 2020". That realistically means it could arrive any time from October onwards, but as late as the end of the year.
The company has committed to that release date repeatedly, in a variety of announcements and interviews, as well as in the most recent event.
It has also been clear that the coronavirus outbreak has not delayed that launch date, though it could mean that there are more limited numbers of the console available at launch.
Some games, such as a sequel to Spider-Man, have also been given the same release date. But Sony is yet to say whether that or any other game will be a launch title.
Sony is also yet to announce the price for its console. Rumours have suggested that the decision is proving difficult, with the high-performance parts in the new console said to be expensive.
A report earlier this year indicated that Sony was working to keep the cost of the console down but that the parts inside were worth around $450, much more expensive than the current PlayStation 4, implying that the price could be similarly higher.
All of the same information is still unknown for the Xbox Series X, which has not announced a price and has given only the same "Holiday" release date. Microsoft has also held a games event for its console, but likewise did not announce which of the games would be available at launch.
