Provo city council approves sale of fiber optic network to Google Fiber

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Provo city council has voted unanimously to approve the sale of their decade-old fiber optic network to Google.

Tuesday night's approval makes Provo the third city selected for the Google Fiber high-speed Internet and television service. The first two were Kansas City, Mo., and Austin, Texas.

Google Inc. will pay $1 for a system that cost $39 million to build.

Provo residents will get basic Internet service at no charge if they pay a $30 hookup fee.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports (http://bit.ly/ZqMxDn ) Provo mayor John Curtis says the city must pay $1.7 million to get the city ready for the handover.

That includes $500,000 to pay a company to locate existing fiber optic cables. Curtis says the money will come from existing funds and at no expense to taxpayers.
