Quebec provincial police are asking the public for help in locating Yacine Zouaoui, 32, after the inmate escaped from the Federal Training Centre in Laval, Que.

Staff at the minimum security prison noticed Zouaoui missing at 10:45 p.m. Thursday. He's serving a sentence for assault and a second degree murder committed in B.C. in 2011, according to Sûreté du Québec (SQ) spokesperson Stéphane Tremblay.

"We know that he left on foot but he could try to find a way to travel or try to request transport and he also could be outside of the province and could be in the province of Ontario," Tremblay said.

Zouaoui stands 6 feet one inch high, weighs 186 pounds and has a dark complexion, brown eyes, brown hair as well as a teardrop tattoo under his left eye and three dots in the web of his left hand. He was last seen wearing a light coloured shirt, jeans and black sneakers.

The Sûreté du Québec is asking anyone with information to call its tip line. Tremblay says that if anyone sees Zouaoui, they should call 911 and should not attempt to approach him.
