NORTH KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Clay County prosecutors have charged two men in connection to a shooting that happened at North Kansas City High School.

Lavondre Smallwood, 18, is charged with first-degree assault, two counts of unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action.

Both men are being held on a $75,000 bond.

“My message to those who come to our community who victimize and endanger our citizens lives is that you will be held accountable and justice will find you inside a Clay County Courthouse,” Thompson said.

The shooting left multiple people with injuries, including a teenager who was a student at NKCHS and an innocent bystander.

An adult not associated with the school was also seriously hurt in the shooting. Police said both victims are now in stable condition.

An investigation revealed that two groups of young men were seen leaving the basketball game at the school just before 6 p.m. March 2.

A witness heard a person, from the second group to leave, yelling at the first group to leave while keeping one hand concealed.

A person from the first group then pulled out a firearm and began shooting. Thompson said at that point, three people from the second group pulled out firearms and began shooting.

Thompson said the adult injured in the shooting was part of the first group of young men seen leaving the basketball game. Surveillance video shows him falling to the ground while being shot at. He’s then seen raising a black handgun and firing one time.

Footage showed a total of five individuals from the two groups shooting firearms.

“We definitely want to keep this kind of behavior off the streets of North Kansas City. We want to keep it off the streets of anywhere in America,” NKC Police Chief Kevin Freeman said. “This is unacceptable behavior and reckless endangerment of people’s safety and lives.”
