KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office said it won’t press charges in the death of John Bartrom, founder of Jericho Home Improvements.

Bartrom was shot and killed Jan. 7 near 62nd Street and Prospect Avenue in Kansas City. Officers found him lying unresponsive in a nearby business parking lot.

The 46-year-old was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Police initially took one person into custody for further questioning, but KCPD never released more information on what led up to the shooting.

Now Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker said Friday her office has reviewed the case and won’t press charges due to self-defense.

The prosecutor’s office said evidence showed the man who shot the Jericho Home founder fired after Bartrom struggled with the man and tried to pull him from his vehicle.

Baker said her office came to this decision in consultation with detectives.
