Prosecutor: Teen arrested in police chase drove over 100 mph, pointed gun at officers twice

An 18-year-old man is accused of pointing a gun at an officer twice and then leading police on a miles-long vehicle chase during which he is accused of driving more than 100 mph.

Angel Mosqueda was denied a bond reduction Wednesday in connection with a high-speed chase with police about 11:30 a.m. Monday when he pointed a gun at an officer and fled the scene.

Mosqueda was arrested on several charges in connection with the police chase that started in Northeast El Paso and ended at Bassett Place, El Paso Police Department officials said.

The charges include aggravated assault on a peace officer, unlawful carrying of a weapon, manufacturing or delivery of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana and two counts of evading arrest with a motor vehicle.

He also was arrested in connection with a bond violation in a pending case involving the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, according to statements made during the bond reduction hearing.

An El Paso Police Department motorcycle officer, who has been with the department for 11 years, conducted a traffic stop Monday on Mosqueda, who was driving a 2013 Lexus, for not wearing a seat belt in the 9700 block of McCombs Street by Railroad Drive in Northeast El Paso, police said.

The officer asked Mosqueda for his ID, but he told the officer he did not have any, El Paso County District Attorney's Office Assistant District Attorney Danica Carman said during the hearing.

Mosqueda kept the vehicle in gear, Carman said. The officer then asked him to turn off the car, she added. He then turned his body toward the officer and pointed a handgun at him, then fled, Carman said.

The officer followed Mosqueda and attempted to pull him over again, but he refused to pull over, Carman said.

The officer lost sight of Mosqueda during the chase, but other officers assisting in the incident located him driving on Spur 601 and Airport Road, police said.

Mosqueda eventually pulled over, but again pulled out a gun and pointed it at an officer, Carman said.

He then fled the scene again in his car and was driving at speeds over 100 mph, Carman said. She added officers later found two handguns in Mosqueda's car.

Mosqueda then crashed his vehicle at Montana Avenue and Geronimo Drive, police said.

He then fled on foot with a handgun toward Bassett Place, police said.

Officers arrested Mosqueda at one of the main entrances on the north side of the mall.

He was then booked into the El Paso County Jail on bonds totaling $196,100, police said.

El Paso County Jail Magistrate Judge Linda Estrada denied a request to reduce Mosqueda's bond during Wednesday's detention hearing.

"I'm going to deny any reduction based off of the nature and the circumstances of the offenses and the future safety of the community," Estrada said during the hearing.
