Proposed Wildwood holiday lights ordinance met with pushback

WILDWOOD, Mo. – An apartment complex in Wildwood has become the talk of the town, not for it’s beauty but because it’s unavoidable at night.

Just off of U.S. Highway 100 sits an apartment complex with holiday lights draped across several apartment balconies.

The light display has become a focal point of the Wildwood City Council, as an ordinance was proposed Monday night. Ordinance 2869 looks to adjust an old city ordinance dealing with holiday lights.

As currently worded, poorly maintained lights and lights aimed at another building would be in violation. Lights also could not be hung for 45 consecutive days.

Several residents testified against the current proposal, asking for more research to be done. Some council members also had questions.

“I am really not sure how we would enforce this,” City Council member Joe Farmer said. “To my knowledge, we don’t have any nighttime enforcement code person who is going to check on this.”

Famer said he is simply not a fan of the bill.

“I get the general point, but it needs a whole lot of work,” he said.

Mayor Jim Bowlin told FOX 2 that City Council had been discussing the ordinance for a few months, and that it was not too different from other city ordinances.

“We have a lot of ordinances, trees and parking, somehow we manage to get done with enforcement, (so) I don’t think this would be any different,” Bowlin said.

City Council did not vote on the ordinance, instead referring it to the Planning and Parks Committee, which will study it further.
