How to properly display the American flag

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — There are many proper ways to display the American flag at your home or business, including where you fly it on your porch.

According to Kevin Loukopoulos, chairman of the Chemung County Veteran’s Council and a Marine of seven years, the American flag is flown higher than other flags out of respect.

Loukopoulos suggests that if you display the American flag on a window, the blue field with the stars should be to the left and the red and white stripes should be on the right when viewed from outside. When hanging the flag, make sure that the blue field with the stars is on top and the red and white stripes are below it.

The American flag wasn’t always revered — at the beginning, it was an afterthought

While lowering the flag, Loukopoulos said, “You’re supposed to lower your flags slowly and ensure that it does not touch the ground at any time. It’s out of respect and reverence of our flag. You don’t want it to touch the ground.”

According to Loukopoulos, when folding the flag, you fold it once, then fold it again before folding it into a triangle. When the folding is completed, the flag should end up in a triangle with the blue field of stars shown on all sides.

Loukopoulos also added that if your flag is ripped, you may drop it off at your local American Legion Post for proper disposal.
