Project set to fix Bristol Avenue bottleneck in Walker

WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) — Construction will start soon on a longtime headache for drivers in Walker: The Bristol Avenue railroad bridge.

Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, March 25 to replace the single-span bridge that has been in place for years, forcing southbound drivers to yield to oncoming traffic to prevent crashes below the overpass.

The new bridge will have two separate arches to accommodate traffic in both directions. The city of Walker also says upgrades to the sewer and water mains and underground utilities will be done as well.

Bristol Avenue is set to be closed between Kloet Street and Vinecroft Street for the duration of the project, which is scheduled to wrap up by the end of August.

Kamminga & Roodvoets won the construction contract last fall. Representatives from the company along with city officials will be on hand Monday night for an open house to answer questions about the project.

That is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m. on the lower level of Walker Fire Station No. 3, 1470 3 Mile Road NW.
