Program offers free pool passes to Bernalillo County, Albuquerque families

BERNALILLO COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Bernalillo County is trying to prevent kids from going in ditches or arroyos this summer with the “Ditch the Ditches” program.

The program, which is in its 29th year, is designed to educate families on the risks associated with playing in ditches and arroyos, aiming for zero drownings or accidents in these areas. The program offers local children a complimentary one-day entry to the City of Albuquerque or Bernalillo County Pools.

“Individuals will go with their parent or guardian to any Albuquerque or Bernalillo County fire station. They are stocked with pool passes, and they’re handing them out. You can use them at any facility,” said Bernalillo County Fire and Rescue Division Chief Joel Gallegos.

The Ditch and Water Safety Task Force kicked off the program at the South Valley Pool and Splash Pad on Thursday and handed out free swim passes. The campaign will run through Sept. 1.

Recipients must be 17 or younger to receive a free pool pass. To learn more and see what locations are participating, click here.
