SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) — Amid the escalating tensions in the region, calls for a ceasefire continue.

People lined the streets in Downtown Sarasota, chanting and waving banners demanding an end to violence in Gaza.

“I am out here because there are 14,000 children dead in Gaza,” Shawn Salvious said.

Demonstrators said they are showing solidarity with Palestinians as Israel prepares its latest assault in its war against Hamas.

“I want to make sure that everybody is happy— Jews, Palestinians and Muslims and Christians live, I still go there, my family is there, outside of Gaza, they are not in Gaza, but everyone is suffering somehow over there,” onlooker Missam Younis said.

Israel has issued a warning to Palestinians to evacuate parts of Rafa in southern Gaza,
something these protesters say is absurd.

“Because they push Palestinians to Rafah and now, they are attacking Rafa so where should Palestinians go, to the moon,” Amina Shammou said.

“Trying to send them to a place that’s already been bombed. They have no new hospitals, new universities. It’s insane, and I think we need to raise awareness,” Salvious said.

Demonstrators said today’s march was part of a statewide call among other groups to ceasefire in the Tampa Bay Area.
