Keeping the memory of a grandparent alive is extremely important for many families. And the royal family is no exception. In a new documentary about Princess Diana, called Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, Prince William talks about how he does exactly that. The movie debuts on ITV and HBO on Monday.

Prince George, who is four years old, and Princess Charlotte, who is two, may never have gotten to meet their grandma. But their dad talks about her all the time.

In the documentary, William shares how he is “constantly talking about Granny Diana.” He adds, “We’ve got more photos up round the house now of her and we talk about her a bit and stuff.”

He continues:

“It’s hard because obviously Catherine didn’t know her, so she cannot really provide that — that level of detail. So, I do [when] regularly putting George or Charlotte to bed, talk about her and just try and remind them that there are two grandmothers, there were two grandmothers in their lives, and so it’s important that they know who she was and that she existed.”

Prince William also talks about how his mother’s hands-on parenting style greatly influenced his own. Meaning he also wants to be a huge part of his young children’s lives. Aww.

“I want to make as much time and effort with Charlotte and George as I can because I realize that these early years particularly are crucial for children, and having seen, you know, what she did for us,” he says.

Finally, Prince William jokingly admits she might have complicated how he raises George and Charlotte. While Princess Diana would have loved her grandkids more than anything, she would have been a handful for the parents!

“She’d be a nightmare grandmother, absolute nightmare, she’d love the children to bits, but she’d be an absolute nightmare,” William says. “She’d come and go and she’d come in probably at bath time, cause an amazing amount of scene, bubbles everywhere, bathwater all over the place and — and then leave.”

Sounds like fun! We love that Prince George and Princess Charlotte will grow up with loving stories of their Granny Diana.

We can’t wait to watch the full documentary and learn more about Princess Diana.
