After a nearly four-week hiatus from public duties following his wife’s cancer announcement, Prince William will be returning to his royal engagements this Thursday, April 18.

The Prince of Wales has been caring for his three children—Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5—while they are on a school break, as well as for Princess Kate while she undergoes preventive chemotherapy.

Upon Kate’s announcement, sources told People that William would be absent from public duties until after the couple’s children returned to school on April 17.

Kensington Palace announced today that William’s first engagement on Thursday will see him visit Surrey and West London to highlight the work of community and environmental impact organizations. Starting in Sunbury-on-Thames, he will spend some time with Surplus to Supper, a food distribution charity, where he will learn how the organization delivers, sorts, and repackages unused food for community groups. Following this, he will visit a youth center that receives and distributes regular deliveries of the surplus food.

“Protecting the environment for future generations is one of The Prince of Wales’s key priorities and in 2020 he launched The Earthshot Prize, a global environmental prize and platform to discover, award, celebrate and scale ground-breaking solutions to repair and regenerate the planet,” the palace wrote in a statement.

William’s plans come after he and Prince George were spotted on a rare father-son outing in Birmingham, England, last week for a soccer match. They enjoyed the UEFA Europa Conference League 2023–24 quarter-final first-leg match between Aston Villa and Lille OSC from a suite at Villa Park.

The Walses have largely been laying low since Kate shared her cancer diagnosis on March 22. Kensington Palace initially stated that the princess would likely be absent from the public eye until after Easter due to the planned abdominal surgery she underwent in January. However, upon detecting cancer, a palace insider said she will extend her hiatus until she has recovered. The royal couple and their children were noticeably missing from the Easter service at Windsor Castle last month, which was attended by Queen Consort Camilla and King Charles III, who is battling his own cancer.
