Prince William Gets Raw About His Rescue Work: 'I've Had Too Many Sad Stories'

Prince William got candid about the emotional impact of his role as an air ambulance pilot on Thursday.

William and Princess Kate met with leaders of Young Minds to learn how the group helps parents of children suffering from mental health issues and anxiety. The charity is one of the partners in the royals' Heads Together campaign.

As the couple prepared to listen in to live calls to a helpline, William – who is a helicopter pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance – said, "Can I have an easy one please? I'm carrying a lot of things at the moment. I will be in floods of tears at the end otherwise."

"I've had too many sad stories with the air ambulance," he added. "I can't deal with any more stuff. Just maybe at the lower level, if I can."

"I'm steeling myself the best I can."

On the day that thousands of U.K. students receive their GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) test results, William also confessed that the exam season still has the power to remind him of the anxieties he felt as he waited for his own results 18 years ago. "It still gives me the heebie-jeebies," he said. "I still get sweaty thinking about it."

The visit came one day after he and Kate spent time highlighting mental health work in Luton, where William shared how he still thinks about the death of his mother, Princess Diana every day.
