Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Make Their First Public Appearance Following Yesterday's Unprecedented Statement

From Town & Country

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made their first public appearance after releasing a statement announcing they are taking legal action against a British newspaper.

Fresh from the information that they are suing the Mail on Sunday over a claim it unlawfully published Meghan’s private letter, the couple arrived for work on the final day of their tour of South Africa.

It was business as usual for Harry and Meghan despite the fact that in many places, coverage of the trip has now been overshadowed by stories about their impending legal case and Harry’s unprecedented statement about media coverage of his wife.

However, the Duke and Duchess were smiling this morning as they arrived to see the work of the Youth Employment Services (YES) Hub. Launched by President Ramaphosa in April 2018, YES aims to tackle the critical issue of youth unemployment in South Africa by creating one million new work opportunities in the next three years.

Harry and Meghan were greeted by Melony Campbell from the British High Commission who will introduce Tashmia Ismail-Saville, CEO, YES, before hearing a briefing about the organization. They also toured the Hub’s programs including the digital facility where YES equips community members with skills and knowledge around financial literacy and computer skills.

“We have a massive youth employment problem in South Africa,” Tashmia Ismail-Saville tells T&C. “Legacies of apartheid have meant that communities like this have always been on the back end of education and healthcare so these development outcomes are lower. You have in a township six out ten people unemployed...Places like this are here to bring learning, knowledge, technologies into the community...give younger people who are in the community an idea of career pathways that they can build.”

Ismail-Saville added about the royal visit: “This kind of visit gives such momentum to our movement...It’s fantastic that they come to South Africa and visit this type of space, which is not always comfortable to do.”

She also observed that there is a “real authenticity” about the Duke and Duchess. “It doesn’t feel like this formal, stiff visit,” she said.

Harry and Meghan ended their trip by making speeches.
