Prince George’s County starts security camera rebate program in honor of 13-year-old boy who was fatally shot

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. (DC News Now) — Prince George’s County rolled out a new program that will cover the cost of surveillance cameras in homes and businesses.

Starting as a pilot in Langley Park, Glassmanor and Walker Mill; The program would offer a $200 rebate along with $100 for a subscription fee if needed.

Temple Hills community still on edge nearly 2 months after teen shot, killed in front of home

This comes after 13-year-old Jayz Agnew was shot and killed in 2022. No suspects have been arrested and say it’s because nobody in the surrounding home had security cameras.

“It was 5 in the afternoon,” said Juanita Agnew, mother of Jayz Agnew. “I knew that if if I had cameras, if my neighbors did, we would definitely have some idea as to who did who did this.”

Her, along with District seven councilmember Krystal Oriadha, led a major push for the bill named after Juanita Agnew’s son to get passed.

“For me, there is a bigger picture. This is bigger than Jay’s, and this would definitely help for public safety in general,” Juanita Agnew said.

This comes a week after new legislation was introduced to curb youth crime in the county. A juvenile curfew, along with a ban on untraceable firearms, both were voted on favorably by the council as a whole.

“Law enforcement, the first thing that they do when something happens is go around to see if there’s any cameras,” a councilmember said.

Districts six through eight also have their own security camera programs for residents.

“This is tremendous around this time, not only in Maryland but also in D.C. So to see that … it’s amazing because that’s the need,” Juanita Agnew said.
