Prince George’s County police recover 8 credit card skimmers at convenience stores in April

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — The Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) said that officers have recovered eight credit card skimmers from county convenience stores in the past month.

PGPD said that the skimmers were recovered from stores in these areas:

  • 4500 block of Saint Barnabas Rd. in Temple Hills

  • 3000 block of Forestville Rd. in Forestville

  • 6100 block of Oxon Hill Rd. in Oxon Hill

  • 6800 block of Race Track Rd. in Unincorporated Bowie

  • 6300 block of Central Ave. in Seat Pleasant

  • 11000 block of Baltimore Ave. in Beltsville

  • 9100 block of Riggs Rd. in the Chillum area

  • 5800 block of Greenbelt Rd. in College Park

Card skimmers are put on top of legitimate card readers or check-out devices at stores, ATMs and more. When you swipe your credit or debit card, these skimmers will steal your card information.

PGPD said that in order to keep yourself safe from skimming devices, you should opt for the “Tap to Pay” method or use a contactless card for payment. You should also be wary if a device has a chip reader that is not working.

Police said that stores with more customer traffic are at greater risk for card skimmers.

PGPD said that if you think there is a skimming device, you should leave the device where it is and let police remove it. You should tell store personnel and call police — you can reach detectives investigating these devices at 301-516-1464.

If you think you have fallen victim to a skimming device, you should also reach out to your bank as soon as possible.
