Prince George’s County police arrest suspect for shooting, killing man in stairwell

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — The Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) said a man admitted to shooting and killing someone in a stairwell.

PGPD said 22-year-old Wilmer Echenique-Navarro, of Capitol Heights, was charged with first and second-degree murder for killing 40-year-old Derek Coleman.

On March 3, around 7:15 a.m., officers responded to the 6700 block of New Hampshire Ave. There, they found Coleman shot in an apartment building’s stairwell. He died there.

Through investigating, PGPD was able to identify Echenique-Navarro as the suspect and arrested him on April 15. He admitted to shooting Coleman.

PGPD said the motive of the shooting was still being investigated.
