It’s been over a year since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were evicted from Frogmore Cottage to make way for Prince Andrew. The residence remains vacant after the Sussexes moved out because the Duke of York reportedly refuses to leave his beloved Royal Lodge. The one problem is that he currently doesn’t have an income to support the 30-room estate which is reportedly falling apart.

Andrew managed to bide extra time in Royal Lodge by reportedly promising to renovate the residence, which is in desperate need of repairs, according the Mirror. “The Duke of York has a clear responsibility for the upkeep of the Royal Lodge estate, which is certainly not happening,” claimed a royal source. “The state of the residence will be of great concern to the King after everything that has gone on and been discussed in regards to the house. Prince Andrew was told he must take charge of the necessary renovations, or he will have no cause to stay in the house.”

King Charles III has obviously been preoccupied with his health battle right now, but the insider believes that he “will be alarmed at the true state of the residence after the duke assured him everything was in hand.” The Duke of York might be running out of time once the monarch can focus on details like the state of Royal Lodge. Royal expert Ingrid Seward also noted that “the reason Charles has the problems with Andrew is because of Andrew’s inflated sense of self-importance, which is why he feels he should be living in a palace or somewhere similar.”

Seward’s words echo the sentiments of former BBC producer Sam McAlister, who told SheKnows that Andrew’s echo is well-known. “Imagine being born with no need for a job,” she explained of her firsthand experience with the Duke of York ahead of his disastrous 2019 Newsnight interview. “You’re a prince, your mum’s a queen, you live in a palace. At the stage that I met him, he’d had 59 years of being told that he was incredible, brilliant, and amazing. You know, we all drink the Kool-Aid on ourselves sometimes.”

With Andrew’s finances “shrouded in mystery,” per Seward, it is unlikely that he will be able to maintain the expansive property in the long run. The big question is how long can he hold off on his older brother, or will King Charles make Andrew a problem that Prince William has to deal with? Prince Andrew has been protected for far too long and he has to realize at some point that there are consequences to his actions.
