Primark has been forced to apologise after causing offence with a graphic T-shirt inspired by The Walking Dead.

The high street brand has pulled the item in question from the shelves after a customer complained that it was both offensive and racist, according to the Sheffield Star.

The T-shirt features a bloodied baseball bat, like the one carried by Walking Dead character Neegan, and uses his words "Eeny Meeny Miny Moe" written across the front of the tee.

But now Walking Dead actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan who plays Negan in the series has spoken out.

Taking to Twitter, Jeffrey made his opinion on the claims that the T-Shirt was racist very clear.

Attaching an article with the headline "Walking Dead Shirt Pulled From Stores After Complaint of Racism", Jeffrey commented: "Holy crap people are stupid."

Sheffield couple Ian and Gwen Lucraft wrote a letter of complaint to Primark exec Paul Marchant after being appalled by the 'racially explicit graphic text'.

While the phrase is now commonly finished with the words "catch a tiger by its toe", as it is in the programme, the rhyme used to have a racist ending and Ian argues that "we all know what the original said". Ian is referring to the version of the rhyme that Jeremy Clarkson also caused outrage for using during Top Gear filming.

He told The Sheffield Star: "The graphic has a large American baseball bat, wrapped round with barbed wire, and covered with blood.

"This image relates directly to the practice of assaulting black people in America.

"It is directly threatening of a racist assault, and if I were black and were faced by a wearer I would know just where I stood."

Primark responded to the complaint, saying: "The t-shirt in question is licensed merchandise for the U.S. television series, The Walking Dead, and the quote and image are taken directly from the show.

"Any offence caused by its design was wholly unintentional and Primark sincerely apologises for this.

"Primark is currently removing the product from sale."
