President Trump reportedly wants to give Air Force One a makeover — so it isn't a 'Jackie Kennedy color'

Thanks to his European travels this week, President Trump has logged some considerable hours on Air Force One lately. But will his iconic ride soon be changing?

According to a report by Axios, Trump is eager to give the presidential plane a “more American look,” citing issues with the blue-and-white color scheme. POTUS reportedly wants to ditch the “Jackie Kennedy color,” noting the late first lady’s involvement in an Air Force One redesign in the early 1960s.

Trump reportedly expressed his concerns in a February meeting with Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg, during which the men are said to have discussed a $4 billion deal to replace two 747s for official White House business. (As the New York Times reported in 2015, the planned plane upgrade — new paint job notwithstanding — has been in the works since the Obama era, though the new aircrafts may not be available until 2023.)

Sources told Axios that Trump has his heart set on a patriotic red, white, and blue makeover, with a larger bed on board. Historian Michael Beschloss balked at the proposed paint job and defended the “timeless design” chosen by the Kennedys.

“Every time you see that blue trim and the words ‘United States OF America’ spelled out in that same typeface as an early version of the Declaration of Independence, it brings back JFK landing in Germany to speak at the Berlin Wall, Richard Nixon flying to China, Ronald Reagan stepping off the plane to see Gorbachev in Iceland, and a thousand other scenes of presidents in our past,” he told Axios.

The shade is officially known as “luxurious ultramarine.” Prior to that, presidential aircraft featured the color orange, which Beschloss claims President John F. Kennedy found to be “gaudy.” He instead opted for blue, which was reportedly his favorite color.

News of Trump’s rumored plane plan has largely been met with cracks that he’ll cover the plane in gold leaf, or even the Confederate flag.
