President Obama Sending ‘Prayers and Love’ to Barbara and George H.W. Bush After Hospitalization

President Barack Obama opened his final press conference on Wednesday by sending his “prayers and love” to former President George H. W. Bush and wife Barbara Bush, who are both hospitalized in Houston.

The president said he had been in touch with the Bush family Wednesday morning, adding of the former first couple, “They have not only dedicated their lives to this country, they have been a constant source of friendship and support and good counsel for Michelle and me over the years.”

“They are as fine a couple as we know,” he continued. “So we want to send our prayers and our love to them. Really good people.”

Former President George H.W. Bush, 92, was admitted to Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas on Saturday after experiencing “shortness of breath.” According to a statement released Wednesday by his office, he is now “stable and resting comfortably in the ICU, where he will remain for observation” after undergoing a procedure to address an acute respiratory problem stemming from pneumonia.

His wife, former First Lady Barbara Bush, 91, was admitted to the same hospital on Wednesday “as a precaution after experiencing fatigue and coughing.”
