How to prepare for the spring and summer air travel surge

DENVER (KDVR) — A record 4.7 billion people will fly this year, according to the International Air Transport Association, raising the potential for increased travel nightmares.

So what can travelers do to avoid problems? Travel experts and consumer advocates told FOX31 that early planning and options like trip insurance can help reduce the impact of cancellations, delays and lost luggage.

2 Colorado myths that persist through the years

The Colorado Public Interest Research Group, or CoPIRG for short, monitors travel issues that affect consumers.

“Unfortunately, last year we saw a record number of complaints,” Executive Director Danny Katz told FOX31.

What are the best flights to book?

Katz recommends that travelers be strategic when booking flights to protect against the impact of delays.

“The kinds of flights you should be looking for would be morning flights. And flights that don’t have connections — to the extent that you can make that happen — that just reduces the risk,” Katz said.

Protect your flight costs

Check refund policies if using a third-party website to book a trip. Using a credit card can offer more protection when it comes to disputes with the airline.

Stay informed of any changes by downloading the airline’s app to communicate with customer service and receive immediate notifications of cancellations and gate changes.

Keep track of your luggage – and your stuff

Luggage nightmares can ruin a vacation. Katz said using a tracker can provide extra security.

“They sell these trackers online — you can find them between $14 or $28, some good trackers. If you put that in the bag, if the airline loses your bag, you at least know where it is,” Katz said.

Did you know this Colorado city was planned as a utopia?

Before closing up the bag, document belongings.

“Take a picture of everything right before you put it in your bag, because you’re entitled to $3,800 worth of refunds if they lose your bag. But you’re going to have to document it,” Katz said.

Does the airline have to refund a canceled flight?

In the event of a flight cancellation, it is important to know your rights.

“No matter what reason a flight is canceled, you are entitled to a refund. Now, they may choose to rebook you, and if you accept that, then you are waiving that refund,” Katz said.

Complaints should be submitted to the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Submitted complaints will require the airline to respond.
