Predicting the Miami Dolphins depth chart: Quarterback, Kicker, and Punter

Beginning today we will be embarking on a new short term series. Taking place during the week for the next couple of days, I will be doing my best to help sort out what the Miami Dolphins depth chart could look like entering the final weeks of the pre-season and heading into the regular season.

While some days we will only take a look at one positional group, today we will starting off by taking a look at three different spots on the roster. Due to the simple nature of the quarterback position, today we will take a crack at trying to predict the unpredictable kicking game battle.

With that all said, let’s not waste anymore time and get right to it. First off, lets take a — very quick — look at how the depth chart for the quarterbacks could be setting up.

Quarterbacks

Ryan Tannehill is the starter. Plain and simple. It’s whats going to happen behind him that is the real question mark. Veteran and former starter Matt Moore was signed to a contract extension earlier in the offseason while the team also drafted record breaking quarterback and Miami-area native Brandon Doughty in the seventh round of the NFL Draft.

Depending on whether or not the Dolphins want to take three quarterbacks into the regular season, Doughty and Moore will be fighting for the team’s second string — and possibly final string — quarterback spot. If it is only two quarterbacks, look for Moore to be the backup with Doughty heading to the practice squad as Adam Gase’s project player.

Kicker

Like usual, the Miami Dolphins brought in an undrafted kicker to battle the incumbent during the pre-season. This year, the rookie looking to challenge second year pro Andrew Franks will be Marshall Koehn. The Iowa product — who is possibly the fastest kicker to ever enter the NFL — has the leg to earn the job, however, his accuracy and youth could be questioned.

The safe pick here would be to give Andrew Franks another year at the position. Though he was moderately successful last season, Franks has leg needed to be a success in most occasions. Giving him another year to hone his craft will likely be on the cards for the RPI product.

Punter

Though the Miami Dolphins only have a single punter on their current roster, I expect them to bring in some undrafted rookie to challenge incumbent Matt Darr. However, while I do see a challenger on the horizon, I doubt they will be able to unseat Darr.

The second year pro, Matt Darr managed to take down veteran Brandon Fields last pre-season. Fields was seen by many at the time as one of the league’s top punters. Choosing Darr over Fields must mean that the Dolphins see some potential for Darr now and in the future.
