PITTSBURGH (AP) -- PPG Industries declared force majeure Thursday on vinyl chloride monomer, which is used in a variety of building products, after a fire at a facility in Louisiana.
The fire broke out Monday at a facility in Lake Charles, La., according to the Pittsburgh company. One employee is being treated at a hospital, though the fire did not cause any off-site environmental damage. Vinyl chloride monomer is listed as a possible carcinogen by federal health officials.
Force majeure is a provision that frees companies from liability when an extraordinary event occurs that could significantly disrupt business.
Polyvinyl chloride is used to make things like PVC pipe and siding.
Shares of PPG Industries Inc. rose 46 cents to $135.20 in morning trading.
