PPD continue search for suspects in 2020 murder

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — It has been four years since someone killed Curtis Walton while trying to rob him in Portsmouth.

Police continue to search for the suspects.

They have several clues, but just not enough to put together a strong case. The Liberty Law School graduate was honored last year by Virginia leaders.

At the corner of Columbia Street and Halifax Avenue in Portsmouth, Curtis Walton was shot and killed. Four years later a memorial is a constant reminder of his death. Curtis’ mom Bonnie Walton also posting signs for justice.

“I know it is hard on them and we do every thing we possibly can to get the answers for them that we can,” said Portsmouth Police Det. Gino Jackson.

On the evening of April 8, 2020, Walton was walking down Columbia Street near his childhood home when two people approached him in a dark colored vehicle. They attempted to rob him. Walton was shot and killed.

“There are two individuals that we know for certain that were involved in Mr. Walton’s death directly,” Jackson said. “However, there could be numerous people that could have other information in reference to the case.”

Walton was 33 years old a graduate of Old Dominion University and in 2012 Liberty Law. That school said he dedicated his life to God and was a volunteer for many organizations. He served his country throughout his career in public services with the United States government.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin even proclaimed April 8, 2023 as Curtis Walton Love Through Kindness Day in Virginia — love standing for “Let Our Violence End.”

Portsmouth police hope to end the violence and ask for change.

“If they want to take serious and take the violence on on the city,” said Portsmouth Police Det. Michael Siniscalchi, “we have got to have more people come forward talk with us, help us directly and appropriately go after the people responsible for these violent crimes.”

Walton’s family agreed with police and is also asking the public for help. They hope that eventually those responsible for Curtis’ death will one day be held responsible.
