1 dead in possible road rage crash on E-470

DENVER (KDVR) — E-470 was closed in both directions Monday morning after one person was killed in a crash that investigators suspect may have been road rage-related.

Colorado State Patrol told FOX31 the crash happened at 5:45 a.m. on the southbound Interstate 25 on-ramp to E-470.

Witnesses told troopers the crash stemmed from a possible road rage incident between two vehicles. CSP said a third vehicle ran over debris from the crash.

“Road rage was brought up by the callers who called 911,” Colorado State Patrol Sgt. Patrick Rice said. “Because it was brought up as a factor leading up to the crash, our investigators are considering that as part of their investigation.”

Two people were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. One person was pronounced dead at the hospital.

911 callers report E-470 crash

FOX31 obtained Broomfield 911 calls from witnesses to the incident.

“There was a really bad accident on E-470 right in front of us,” a caller told dispatchers.

“I can tell you what happened. A red SUV came by us, probably by about 90 (mph), followed by a little white sedan,” the caller said.

Where that white sedan ended up is not clear.

“When they ran into traffic that was doing the speed limit, the SUV slams on his brakes and he starts swerving, and he rolled the car three times,” the caller told 911 operators.

“It literally happened right in front of us,” another caller said. “We narrowly missed it ourselves.”

At one point, all of E-470 was shut down from Sheridan Parkway to I-25. The westbound lanes had reopened by around 8:20 a.m., and all lanes had reopened by 10 a.m.

CSP said the investigation is ongoing and potential charges are being investigated.
