Possible measles exposure at UC Davis Medical Center

(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento County health officials confirmed Friday morning that a child with measles visited UC Davis Medical Center’s emergency department twice this week and possibly exposed other visitors and workers.

Sacramento County Public Health said the child visited the center on May 6 between 10 p.m. and 3:15 a.m. and again on May 7 between 11 a.m. and 6:45 p.m.

The medical center and county health officials are contacting people who may have been potentially exposed.

Health officials say that anyone who is not vaccinated against measles or who does not know their vaccination status and who was in the medical center during those times is at risk of developing measles between 7 to 21 days after exposure.

Uncommon disease found in California deer population for the first time

Health officials say these people should do the following:
• Review their immunization and medical records to see if they are protected against measles, and talk with their medical provider about getting the vaccine or call county health officials to receive it at 916-875-7468
• Do not go to a medical provider or emergency room in person, but instead contact their medical provider as soon as possible if the person possibly exposed is pregnant, is an infant, has a weakened immune system or is not immunized
• Monitor symptoms such as fever or an unexplained rash from 7 to 21 days after the exposure. Contact medical providers if symptoms develop and avoid going in person unless with a mask and let staff know immediately about the measles exposure

According to the CDC, measles can cause serious health complications, especially in young children, and is very contagious, spreading through coughs or sneezes.

Although measles is considered eliminated in the U.S., the disease is “brought into the United States by unvaccinated travelers” who likely get the disease in another country.

In early March, a child with measles potentially exposed several hundred people at UC Davis Medical Center.
