4 tornadoes touch down in Pittsburgh region, NWS confirms

Four tornadoes touched down Friday in the Pittsburgh region, the National Weather Service confirms.

One tornado touched down in Harrison City, Westmoreland County, one near Elrama in Washington County, one on Washington Boulevard near the Highland Park Bridge in the city of Pittsburgh and one near the Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin.

The tornado shown in the video above is the first one to touch down in Pittsburgh since 1998. It is a confirmed EF-1 tornado with 105 mph winds. Damage was reported at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium.

The NWS survey team on Saturday confirmed an EF-0 with a maximum wind speed of 70 miles per hour touched down in Harrison City, Westmoreland County. The tornado tracked from the Municipal Complex to the Greensburg-Jeannette Regional Airport. The NWS says this tornado created minor tree and structural damage.

The Elrama tornado was also rated an EF-0 with a maximum wind speed of 80 miles per hour. NWS officials say damage from this tornado included homes losing shingles or siding, tree damage and destroyed furniture. A mobile home lost its porch roof and a swimming pool collapsed when the tornado tried to lift it.

The National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down near the Allegheny County Airport on Friday. It was rated as an EF-0. Officials say it traveled a path of 0.6 miles after it started at the airport in West Mifflin. Video evidence helped NWS determine that the tornado traveled down Noble Drive. No one was injured by this tornado.
