Portsmouth schools to start before Labor Day

For the first time, Portsmouth Public Schools will start before Labor Day this year.

The 2024-25 school calendar starting Aug. 26 was approved during Thursday’s school board meeting in a 6-1 vote. Board member Sarah Hinds voted no and board members Tamara Shewmake and Melvin Cotton were absent. The last day of school is June 6, 2025.

After the vote, families received a message stating that the change aligns the division with others.

Last year, more Hampton Roads schools shifted to pre-Labor Day starts. Portsmouth was one of the last. Portsmouth schools held off on the change to get more input from the community.
