Portland’s iconic Keller Fountain to remain dry as repairs continue

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The faucet remains off at one of downtown’s most recognizable landmarks, and that won’t change anytime soon.

The historic Ira Keller Fountain has been running dry for close to a year, after its aging pump broke in May of 2023.

City staff now tells KOIN 6 it’s unlikely to be fixed for “several more months,” meaning it won’t be flowing for some upcoming, highly visible events like Cinco de Mayo celebrations or Rose Festival.

The Portland Water Bureau said in an email that the fountain still “…needs major repairs to its internal pump system.”

An attempt to reinstall the old pump in December failed, and the city says four months later its contractor is still waiting on specialized parts to arrive before they try again.

The fountain holds a special place in city history, and provides a unique, open space during warm spring and summer days.

The fountain sits directly across from the well-known Keller Auditorium, which is currently under review for three different proposals to renovate or replace it.

While the city’s water bureau is in charge of repairs, day-to-day maintenance and oversight falls within Portland Parks and Recreation.
