(PORTLAND TRIBUNE) — Esperanza Spalding, the Grammy Award winner from Portland, sang and played bass at the Biamp Portland Jazz Festival in an event with Shabaka Hutchings, Friday, Feb. 23 at Newmark Theatre.

Photographer Norman Eder caught many great photos. He said that Spalding wore a mask most of the show, taking it off only once to sing. The rest of the time Spalding supported Shabaka with bass play — out of the spotlight.

Shabaka has been a London jazz sensation among the African and Caribbean immigrant community.

“You go into a club in London and there’ll be 200 kids under the age of 25 dancing to his music,” said Nicholas Salas-Harris, festival artistic director. “He’s considered a leader of that London jazz scene.” Shabaka has been a saxophone player, but he’s playing flute on his latest project.
