Portland breaks daily record high temperature on Monday

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland smashed its daily record high temperature on Monday as a summer-like stretch of early spring weather continued.

By 3 p.m., Portland’s temperature climbed to 72 degrees, breaking the previous daily high record of 71 degrees, which was set in 1988, according to National Weather Service data.

The mercury reading continued to rise through the afternoon, and by 4 p.m., temperatures were hitting 74 degrees. A high temperature of upwards of 75 degrees is forecasted for Monday.

“Portland reached 76 degrees on both Saturday and again on Sunday. Saturday was not a record, but Sunday tied the old record set in 1947. The forecast high for Portland today is 75. This will break the old record of 71 set back in 1988,” KOIN 6 Weather meteorologist Steve Pierce said.

Portland wasn’t the only location that saw a high mercury reading for its daily high records in Oregon, according to the National Weather Service. Daily record high temperatures were tied and set in McMinnville and Hillsboro, respectively. McMinnville’s old record of 72 degrees, set in 1926, was tied on Monday; meanwhile, Hillsboro’s old daily record high of 71 degrees, set in 1978, was broken as the city set a new record of 76 degrees.

What about the rest of the week? Temperatures are expected to continue staying warm through at least Tuesday, but a cooling trend is on the horizon, and with cooler temperatures comes a chance of returning light precipitation starting Wednesday, and possibly more rain by Friday through the weekend.
