Portales pool is closed for summer

May 21—Portales' city pool won't be opening this summer, officials said.

"The pool itself needs to be resealed and refurbished, electrical and IT equipment replaced, pumps replaced, chlorinator replaced and filter sand as well as all of the piping for the baby pool replaced," interim City Manager T.J. Cathey said.

The project is "not feasible this year," he said.

He said the discussion on closing the pool began early this year, before he was appointed interim city manager. City Council members are expected to talk with officials at Eastern New Mexico University about public use of that pool, but no decisions have been made.

Cathey said officials are looking for grant money to help with the pool repair costs.
