Poroshenko loses legal battle over exit denial, Lviv Court rules

The Lviv District Administrative Court ruled against Ukraine’s former president, Petro Poroshenko, in a lawsuit filed against Ukraine’s Parliament Deputy Speaker, Oleksandr Korniyenko, and seven Carpathian border guards who prevented his departure from the country, the court’s chief public relations specialist, Tetyana Romaniv, told the Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne on March 14.
“Yesterday (March 13), a decision was made, announcing both the introductory and operative parts, which fully denied Petro Oleksiyovych’s claim,” she said.
Poroshenko filed a lawsuit against Korniyenko and the border guards on Dec. 18, 2023, alleging they prevented his exit from the country “without any legal grounds.” A preparatory hearing was held on Jan. 17, during which Poroshenko demanded the decision be annulled and sought compensation for moral damages.
Regarding the situation at the border on Dec. 1, Poroshenko said he intended to leave Ukraine to meet with politicians in Poland and the United States. All the details of the visits had been agreed with Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry, he added.
The border guards explained that they refused Poroshenko’s departure because his official trip was canceled by Ukraine’s parliament.

Korniyenko stated that he canceled Poroshenko’s international trip after receiving a confidential letter from an unspecified state institution.
Ukraine’s SBU security service reported on Dec. 2 that Russia planned to use Poroshenko’s planned meeting with Hungarian PM Viktor Orbán in a propaganda campaign against Ukraine.
The European Solidarity party stated that the SBU’s explanation “causes outright surprise” and that Poroshenko only planned visits to Poland and the United States.
Poroshenko was going to meet with leaders of EU countries wary of supporting Ukraine to try and persuade them to change their position, he said on Dec. 4.
