Porch shooting trial resumes in Detroit court

DETROIT (AP) — Testimony has resumed in the trial of a suburban Detroit man who fatally shot a young, unarmed woman on his porch.

The lawyers for 55-year-old Timothy Wafer have recalled firearms expert David Balash to the witness stand on the seventh day of testimony in Wayne County Circuit Court.

Balash says Renisha McBride was very close to a screen door when she was shot last fall.

Wafer is charged with second-degree murder. Wafer is claiming self-defense in the 19-year-old's death, but prosecutors say he didn't need to use deadly force to get her away from his Dearborn Heights home before dawn on Nov. 2.

Balash, formerly of the state police, says his conclusions are partly based on the wounds to McBride and the position of her body after she was shot.
