Time to order Popeyes Cajun turkey

Mark your calendars and set the alarm. The popular Cajun-style precooked whole turkey is returning to Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen Chicken restaurants. Best known for its fried chicken, the Popeyes chain is also known for this annual offering of a "fan favorite Thanksgiving staple" designed to make your holiday hassle-free.

With Thanksgiving not too far off, it's time to get your order in.

The ordering opens Monday at participating Popeyesrestaurants. You'll need to get a jump on it because there's a limited supply and the turkeys with the "zest Louisiana-style seasonings" tend to sell out fast.

The whole Cajun-style turkeys, typically 13-16 pounds, are described as being hand-rubbed with seasonings and pre-cooked. They come frozen and need to be thawed. After thawing, all you need to do is heat and serve. To complete your meal, Popeyes also offers some traditional sides including mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, and biscuits. Prices vary by location. Last year, the price was $39.99, USA Today reported.

Give Thanks Bakery, a European artisan bakery based in Rochester, opened a second location at 3800 Woodward Ave. in the Plaza building in Midtown Detroit. Give Thanks Bakery creates artisan bread, coffee and pastries. Its bread and baked goods — everything from buttery croissants to cakes, tarts and cookies — are made using classic French and German techniques involving a long, cool fermentation of the doughs. The bakery also brews Illy coffee from Italy.

Katy Knoer is the owner along with her husband, Dietrich. They acquired the Give Thanks Bakery at 225 S. Main in Rochester from its founder, Gerald Matthes, in January.

Inside the Detroit space, work stations and access plugs aim to accommodate students at nearby Wayne State University, Cass Tech, and Detroit School of the Arts, as well as other satellite campuses.

"We want our new location to be a comfortable community space that allows Detroiters to enjoy fresh bread, pastries, and the finest coffee every day,” said Knoer in a news release.

Detroit's historic Avenue of Fashion is welcoming another restaurant to the stretch of Livernois that's home to many Black-owned businesses. Pequeño Mexican Cantina is now open. The spot also features a high-end tequila program with a selection of margaritas and other specialty cocktails featuring Don Julio tequila. Pequeño is from B&H consulting owners Frank Blackman and Tara Hrobowski Blackman and managing partner Jaclyn Slater. Frank Blackman previously owned the 24Grille at the Westin Book Cadillac. The restaurant's general manager is Frank's son, Arrington Blackman.

Pequeño, which translates to small in Spanish, is small but not cramped. It covers about 1,400 square feet with seating for 42 inside. There is a garage-style door that opens to the sidewalk with plans for outdoor seating. The main seating is banquet-style. There is seating for about eight at the bar and several other tables.

Pequeño's menu has just enough items and is not too busy. It includes the usual salsa, chips and guacamole. There's the Pequeño fries appetizer covered with queso fresco with spicy ground beef, jalapeno, and pico de gallo underneath. Warning, it's addictive. Main dishes are $10-$12 and include tacos with several protein options, burritos, quesadilla and fajitas. Side dishes include street corn, rice, black beans and pinto beans.

Pequeño Mexican Cantina, 19329 Livernois, Detroit; 313-422-9088. Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday.

Better Health Store opening soon in Dearborn

A Better Health Store in downtown west Dearborn on Michigan Avenue is now expected to open in mid-November, according to a Facebook post. The store will be in the space of the former Merchant's Fine Wine. Merchant's closed in summer 2020 when the owners announced they were retiring.

At 15,000 square feet, this location offers five times more space than the chain's Dearborn location on Telegraph. Along with its selection of health-related products, vitamins and supplements, there will be a full grocery, produce, meats, prepared foods, smoothies and a juicing area. The store also will include a cafe with hot foods and a salad bar along with indoor and outdoor seating. Once the new store opens, the Better Health Store on Telegraph will close.
