A survey commissioned by the National Dairy Council has learned that a whopping 7% of Americans believe that chocolate-flavored milk comes from chocolate-colored cows. And no, they didn't ask this of American children-the respondents were 100% adults.

As the Washington Post points out, that number may seem small, but consider its application to the national population. The figure translates to 17 million citizens, which is more people than live in almost every state in the union.

While the results are a blight on the American education system and food industry, you might want to blame this one on media and advertising. Adults today might remember a circa 1980s commercial from Brown Cow chocolate syrup demonstrating, yep, that cartoon brown cows are responsible for your sugary-sweet milk. It's moo-licious!
