An adaptation of the book of the same name by Alasdair Gray, Poor Things stars Stone as protagonist Bella Baxter, a young woman saved by scientist Godwin 'God' Baxter (Willem Dafoe) after she jumps off a bridge.

God replaces Bella's brain with that of her unborn child, leading to a unique rebirth for the protagonist, now hungry for adventures, Portugal's pastéis de nata, and sexual experiences.

Speaking with Digital Spy about taking the role of Bella, Stone (who also serves as producer) explained how the character has had a profound impact on her.

"There really is something that does happen with certain characters where you do find – I can be a little more forthright since playing Bella because she doesn't really understand why she shouldn't be able to say what it is she needs or thinks," the actress said.

"Maybe that's also just getting older, but there's something so inspiring about how every moment is fascinating to her, and the good and the bad hold equal weight."

Poor Things has racked up several accolades since it premiered at Venice International Film Festival (where it won the Golden Lion) last September, including two Golden Globes and one Critics' Choice Movie Award to Stone.

Up for 11 categories at the upcoming Academy Awards, Lanthimos' film also stars Ramy Youssef, Mark Ruffalo, Jerrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott.

Poor Things is available to watch on Disney+ in the UK and on Hulu in the US.
