Polls are open: Vote now for Volusia-Flagler student of the week

The polls are open!

It's time to vote for the Volusia-Flagler Student of the Week for the week of March 4-8.

The News-Journal gathers nominees who have shown outstanding academic and school achievement and community service. Principals or other delegated professionals can email nominees to njstudentoftheweek@gannett.com.

Voting closes at noon Thursday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour.

Deltona High School

Gabriella Altamirano, 12th grade, will graduate from Deltona High School and earn her associate degree from Daytona State College this year. She is involved in volleyball, athletic training, health academy, Cambridge classes, dual enrollment, National Honor Society, book club, BIPOC and student government association. She also has received certifications in early childhood from the Department of Children and Families.

Father Lopez Catholic High School

Dominic (Diego) Gambino, 10th grade, has a high average in Spanish 3 Honors and studies Spanish at home in his free time. After completing Spanish 1, Gambino skipped Spanish 2 and instead enrolled in Spanish 3 Honors. He has inspired his teachers with his self-taught knowledge of Spanish grammar and his passion to learn.

Mainland High School

Cheyenne Wigley, 12th grade, excels in wrestling and in the Advanced Placement Literature classroom. She keeps up with the novel reading and discussions to a high standard and often leads her small group in novel discussions.

Seabreeze High School

Akshay Gupta, 12th grade, is passionate about learning. He is also highly organized in his role as National Honor Society president and inspires fellow officers to set up and execute opportunities to help the students at Seabreeze and the larger community. Gupta and his officers have developed tutoring opportunities for students who require support and have also assisted families in the community.

Spruce Creek High School

Shae Bryan, 12th grade, has been actively involved in student government since ninth grade. She served as the Junior Class President last year and the Student Body President this year. As president, she has overseen junior prom, homecoming week 2023, several blood drives, 50-plus baskets for the Volusia Basket Brigade, a donation of over 400 toys to the Cops for Christmas campaign and a color run that raised $1,500.

T. Dewitt Taylor Middle High School

Isabela Cosio, 12th grade, is a leader on campus who participates in several extracurricular activities and maintains high academic excellence. She is dual enrolled with the University of Florida, the senior class president, a member of the book club, captain of the Battle of the Books competition team, and a leader in the Latinos in Action organization, tutoring local elementary school students. Cosio has also been named MVP of the Academic Competition Team three years, running the recruiting team members each year.

University High School

Ernie Centeno, 12th grade, is motivated in the classroom and with athletics, maintaining an A-B average while playing varsity basketball. He approaches his work at school and his commitment to his younger siblings at home with dedication and pleasantness.
