Pollen Levels Are Going Up, To Allergy Sufferers’ Despair

DOTHAN, Al. (WDHN)– Spring is still about a week away, but allergy season is in full bloom.

Most of the Southeast is in the midst of a “pollen-bomb” with high and medium-high levels of pollen in the air.

The result? Allergy sufferers are sneezing, coughing, and blowing their noses more.

“Histamine is released, that causes us to feel itchy, that causes our eyes to feel itchy, our throats to close up, and have wheezing,” said Dr. Darien Sutton, ABC News medical contributor, on Good Morning America.

Cars and other outdoor items are covered in a blanket of yellow, dusty pollen.

Allergy season typically begins in April, but it shows signs of starting earlier each year, and human actions might be to blame.

According to a 2023 study from climate central, the allergy season has increased by 15 days in 200 different cities since 1970.

The study says this is because increased levels of carbon dioxide are increasing pollen release.

Doctors recommend using air purifiers, changing air filters, wearing masks, showering, changing clothes, and consulting one’s doctor about over-the-counter and prescription medications.

“It’s about figuring out how you can change your environment,” Sutton said.
