While the president's approval rating has not dropped, the latest poll from CNN finds that a growing number of Americans think the country is headed in the wrong direction in recent weeks.

The poll asked respondents to assess how well things were going in the country right now, and 51 percent responded either "pretty badly" or "very badly," with one in five giving the latter and harsher answer.

Another 46 percent of those surveyed had a more optimistic opinion, with 38 percent saying things were going "fairly well" and 8 percent saying "very well."

The rate of negative responses is not the highest that a CNN survey has uncovered since President Donald Trump was elected. The percent of those saying things were going either "pretty badly" or "very badly" hit 53 percent twice in the last year -- once in the weeks after the 2016 election and then again two weeks after Inauguration Day.

The survey also found 56 percent of respondents said the country is headed in the wrong direction under Trump, while 38 percent said it is headed in the right direction.

On specific issues, a majority of respondents disapprove of the president's handling of immigration (37 percent approve and 59 percent disapprove), environmental policy (32 percent approve and 56 percent disapprove) and his relationship with Republicans in Congress (32 percent approve and 54 percent disapprove).

However, the poll brought one piece of good news for the president -- his approval rating has held steady at 37 percent. It's the lowest approval rating CNN has reported since he took office.

The results track closely to the results that similar polls, including Gallup, have found -- placing the president's approval in the mid to high 30-percent range in recent days and weeks. That's down from the high-to-mid 40-percent approval ratings he saw earlier in his presidency.

Rasmussen tracking poll, which typically shows favorable numbers for Trump, has his approval at 41 percent.
